Richard Savino Reflects on Pride, Progress, and Community

Growing up in Westchester County, New York during the 1970s and 80s, RPM Living associate Richard Savino rarely saw positive representation of LGBTQ+ individuals.
"I can't recall many queer role models from that time," Richard shared. "What I do remember were stereotypes, negative portrayals, and a culture where many people felt they had to hide who they were."
That environment shaped his experience, and Richard didn't officially come out until he was 25 years old.
In 1996, he made a promise to himself: if he ever truly fell in love, he would stop hiding who he was from the people he cared about.
"Though it wasn't easy, I'll never regret it," he said. "I only wish I had done it sooner."
Over the past three decades, Richard has witnessed meaningful progress for the LGBTQ+ community, including greater visibility, stronger support systems, and more opportunities for people to live openly and authentically.
He also encourages associates to explore RPM Living's Employee Resource Groups, which provide spaces to connect, learn, and build community.
As we recognize Pride Month and International Pride Day, Richard hopes others remember one simple message:
"Never let fear stop you from being yourself."
